I’m Grateful Anger No Longer Consumes Me

This morning as I lay on the living floor doing extremely uncomfortable physical therapy exercises for my neck, an unexpected thought popped into my head: I am so grateful I’m not angry all the time any more.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving so feelings of gratitude shouldn’t be surprising, but I wasn’t quite sure where this one came from. Yet, it is truly what I am most thankful for this year.

When I returned to work full time last February, my biggest fear was turning back into “scary mommy.” I had spent the previous two years trying to figure ...

Lessons from the First Week Back to Work

It’s been 12 years since I have started a new job. I had forgotten how physically and emotionally draining the first few days, weeks and maybe even months can be.

After a whirlwind first day, spent meeting new coworkers and going through a massive project list followed by rushing home to wolf down food and get my daughter to gymnastics, I crawled into bed exhausted. Yet sleep eluded me.

Goodbye, Christmas, It's Time to Move On

Am I the only one who feels relieved when Christmas is over? I don’t know about you, but as soon as December 26 rolls around, I feel the immediate urge to take down every single Christmas decoration and shove it in the attic for the next year. The day after Christmas is like the day after a night of binge drinking. The fun is over and now you have to peel yourself out of bed, head pounding, and deal with the mess.

Sunny Summer Thoughts to Combat the Polar Vortex

When my husband and I decided to leave sunny Colorado and head back to our roots in the Midwest, we were prepared for tough winters. I, however, was not prepared to suffer through the coldest, snowiest winter in 20 years.

This morning I determined the only way to get through the remaining weeks of this awful winter is to dream of summer. Summertime by Lake Michigan is pure heaven. On the drive to school today, my daughter and I started a list of things we want to do this summer. Our list had the usual summer fun like the fair ...

Mammograms, Therapy and Other Midlife Firsts Bookmark and Share

Last week I let a woman who reminded me of my grandmother get to second base. It was my first time so I was nervous, but she was a pro.

In fact her cheerful manner as she squished my breasts into the mammogram machine actually may have made the entire experience less awkward than the first time I was felt up—at age 15.

What made the day even more memorable is that not more than an hour before my topless experience, I was deep into my first-ever therapy session. If I had added a colonoscopy to the day, I ...
